January 02 2021, Mercedes-Benz Vancouver
Mercedes-Benz is ever-impressive. With quality finishes, high performance, and luxury design, the marque has become both the achievement and the goal. The only thing that could possibly be better? Mercedes-AMG.
Welcome to Mercedes-AMG
As the performance division of Mercedes-Benz, AMG creates some of the most sought-after vehicles in the world. AMG models are the product of skilled craftsmen, designers, and engineers who live to test the limits and who hold dear one shared conviction: that on the road to driving performance, shortcuts never win the race.
What is AMG?
As the performance division for Mercedes-Benz, AMG (named after engineers Aufecht, Melcher, and Großaspach) creates vehicles with advanced engines, aerodynamic bodies, and high-speed capabilities. The vehicles it produces are similar to standard Mercedes-Benz models— just with higher capabilities. Mercedes-Benz drivers have the option of selecting a high-performance AMG model that’s just as sleek but much more powerful than the standard options.
A C 63 AMG vehicle, for example, has a brake horsepower of 457 and can accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 4.2 seconds. Its standard counterpart has only 186 brake horsepower and takes 9.8 seconds to reach 100 kilometers per hour.
The AMG Pedigree
The story of AMG began in 1967 when two driven automotive engineers embarked on a passion project: using their expertise to toy with existing Mercedes-Benz racecar engines, on the hunt for ways to improve.
A testament to the aggressive attitude of AMG, in 1986, the engineers unveiled “The Hammer” — the world’s fastest passenger sedan – with a top speed of 306 km/h.
Then, in 1990, after 23 years, AMG and Mercedes-Benz made their partnership official with a signed agreement of cooperation.
Seamless AMG Integration
Thanks to a strong partnership agreement, it’s not Mercedes-Benz or AMG— it’s Mercedes-AMG.
Every Mercedes-Benz model has an AMG counterpart. To bridge the gap between standard design and high-end AMG performance, the AMG division partners with Mercedes-Benz designers. Together, the team ensures that AMG upgrades improve performance and enhance horsepower without taking away from the dynamics, comfort, and design that make standard Mercedes-Benz models so iconic.
The AMG engineers then proceed to alter the vehicle, making room for new, higher-performance characteristics. They pay particular attention to the features essential to safety and efficiency, ensuring a smooth, consistent ride at even the highest speeds.
This seamless collaboration between design and performance makes the decision to upgrade one of the easiest decisions you’ll make all year.
Drive to Feel Alive
From better suspension to engines that roar, AMG vehicles have a number of advantages over the traditional versions of each model, including:
- Enhanced engines: With the exception of 6-cylinder models, all AMG engines are handcrafted and offer higher horsepower and torque.
- Improved interiors: AMG vehicles feature bucket seats, upgraded Alcantara finishes, and carbon accents to create a sportier aesthetic.
- Exterior optimization: The sporty, Mercedes-Benz exterior is enhanced in AMG models thanks to features like larger rims.
What's on the Horizon
Thanks to the AMG division’s tireless pursuit of innovation, the AMG Project ONE hypercar — Mercedes-Benz’s first street-legal vehicle delivering over 1,000 horsepower and derived from F1 technology — is coming into view.
The Project ONE Showcar will combine stunning racetrack performance and Formula 1 hybrid technology with exemplary efficiency. Simply put, it both reaches and embodies the pinnacle of what’s technologically feasible for performance vehicles in 2021.
