New Bakeries in Vancouver.
Get It Fresh
February 05 2024, Mercedes-Benz Vancouver
Fresh croissants, tarts and buns—oh my. We’re always keeping our eyes open for delicious local bakeries opening their doors. Read on for six of our favourites, from a French patisserie to a Japanese-style bagel shop.
Tall Shadow Bakery
2474 East Hastings St.
You’ve probably seen Tall Shadow’s hearty loaves at farmers’ markets around town; now they’ve got a cute brick-and-mortar storefront in the heart of Hastings-Sunrise. The pastry case is ever-changing, but don’t sleep on the fruit “Pop Tarts”, Funfetti cookies and mini loaves. Naturally, bread is on offer too, made with sustainably grown Canadian grain and fermented with a sourdough starter, but check their online bake schedule before heading in if you have a favourite loaf—we like to go Thursdays for the Jalapeno & Cheddar Sourdough.
Wa-Bagel
B09-666 Burrard St.
Airy, chewy and deliciously unique, Wa-Bagel by Aburi is the first Japanese bagel spot to open in Vancouver. Led by talented head baker Yukiko Iikura, the bagels went through rigorous testing to get the dough just right—and the results are divine. Favourites include Red Bean & Cream Cheese and Mochi Matcha, and there is also a full menu of premium bagel sandwiches for something heartier. Try the Pacific, with smoked sockeye salmon and plum paste, or the Montreal with smoked meat and caramelized onions.
Ho Yuen Cafe
#113-1750 West 75th Ave
Pineapple danish toast, anyone? This family-owned and operated Hong-Kong–based chain just opened its doors in Marpole on February 1, serving classic and contemporary Hong Kong family-style breakfast and lunch dishes, as well as baked goods. Seek out the pineapple buns from the bakeshop in unique-to-Vancouver flavours like red bean and dark chocolate (plus that aforementioned pineapple danish toast).
Beaucoup Bakery
602 Dunsmuir St
A corner of Paris opened downtown last year—cute patio included. The second Beaucoup location has many of the delicious French treats that the original (and award-winning) Fir Street patisserie is famous for, plus a delightful retail selection of giftable items like Beaucoup-branded candles, local chocolate, and cards. Reach for a Salted Chocolate Rosemary Cookie, a savoury Onion Bacon Scroll, or any of the Double-Baked Croissants to pair with your cappuccino, then leave with an opulent Pistachio Raspberry Cake for your next special occasion.
Mah Milk Bar
1502 Victoria Dr.
Not a bakery per se but certainly worth a mention, this independent cafe and grocer opened last fall across from Victoria Park. Mah spotlights different local bakeries every few months, and currently stacks the pastry case with delicacies from Doe Coffee on East Hastings. Some highlights? The Spinach & Feta Scroll made from buttery croissant dough, and a sweet Mango-Passionfruit Stuffed Croissant. They also sell loaves of sourdough from the beloved Fife bakery, and sandwiches on their bread, too.
Pablo Cheese Tart
511 W Broadway
If you’re not yet familiar with Japanese cheese tarts, it’s about time you try them—and Pablo is the place to do so. Founded by Masamitsu Umoto, who reportedly spent half a year perfecting the cheesecake recipe, Pablo turns out baked-fresh-daily tarts. With double-baked crusts, and insides filled with an oozy cheese mousse that is equal parts sweet and tart, it’s a taste sensation unlike anything else. The original, matcha, and chocolate cheese are all winners, but if you’re not ready to commit, try the mini sizes first.
Another one to watch: Merci Boulangerie (2879 Commercial Dr.)—previously known for delivering its soft, buttery croissants all over town—is soft-launching early in February. No matter how you slice it, there are plenty of fresh-baked treats to indulge in over the coming months.
