Mercedes-Benz Vancouver GM Sandro Mati test drives the all-new G580 in Carcassonne, France
Well, it’s finally here! The all-new, all-electric 2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology has arrived, and I can’t help but think back to the first time I had the opportunity to drive it last year. Spoiler alert: it was love at first drive.
In May 2024, I was honored to drive the new Mercedes-Benz G580. I was invited to test the all-new range of G-Class models, including the all-electric G580, in the picturesque vineyard hills of Carcassonne, France. (Yes, my job is awesome. No, I’m not sharing.) This unforgettable experience showcased the G-Class’s capabilities on both pavement and challenging off-road trails, where it truly shined.
Testing the G-Class in Carcassonne
Driving through the winding roads of Carcassonne’s surrounding towns was a pleasure, but the off-road trails were where the G-Class showed its mettle. The steep inclines, uneven terrain, and tight turns revealed the G-Class’s off-road prowess. The engineering team ensured that the rugged DNA of this iconic model remained intact, making it clear that the G-Class is as capable as ever. If a car could flex, this would be its moment.
Mercedes brought every variation of the new G-Class, including the G550 with its turbocharged inline-six engine, the powerhouse G63, and the G550d Diesel (unavailable in North America—sorry, folks). Each model excelled in its own way, but the star of the show was undoubtedly the electric G580.
The Electric G580: A Game-Changer
From the moment I sat behind the wheel of the G580, it was clear this vehicle was something special. Unlike many electric vehicles that sacrifice aesthetics for aerodynamics, the G580 maintains the iconic silhouette of the G-Class. Subtle updates, like rounded edges around the headlights and a redesigned rear cable box replacing the spare tire cover, distinguish it from its gas-powered siblings without compromising its unmistakable style. Yes, it’s still the boxy beauty you know and love.
Driving the G580 was a revelation. With 579 horsepower and 859 lb-ft of torque, it delivered smooth, instant acceleration, going from 0-100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds—an impressive feat for a vehicle weighing over 6,400 lbs. The cabin was noticeably quieter and more comfortable than any G-Class I’ve driven before, thanks to its advanced suspension and noise-reduction features.
And then there was the G-ROAR, an ingenious feature that emits a deep, bassy growl during acceleration, mimicking the beloved sound of the G-Class’s V8 engine. Now typically I am not a fan of any artificial sound being pumped into the cabin but I have to admit, the G-ROAR is authentic and adds to the experience of driving the electric G-Class. If you don’t care for it or prefer a quiet cabin, you can switch it off in the settings.
Off-Road Excellence
When it came time to tackle the off-road courses, the G580 truly excelled. Built on a skateboard platform with a Kevlar-encased battery, the G580’s four electric motors and two-speed transmissions at each wheel provided unparalleled traction and control. With the press of a button, the G580 seamlessly adapted to the toughest terrain. The independent motors worked in harmony to find grip, making off-roading effortless. It’s like having a team of tiny, tire-sized sherpas guiding you up a mountain.
One of the most exciting features was the G-Turn, or “tank turn” allowing the G580 to spin on its axis. This incredible capability, while more fun than practical, showcased the innovation behind the G580’s design. (Though, let’s be honest, who wouldn’t want to show that off at a barbecue?)
Additionally, the G580 can wade through up to 33.5 inches of water, outperforming its gas-powered counterparts by almost 6 inches. Yes, it’s basically an electric submarine on wheels.
A New Era for the G-Class
The G580 represents a new chapter for the G-Class, combining legendary off-road capability with cutting-edge electric technology. It’s a true testament to Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to innovation without compromising the essence of its iconic models. The G580 is now available at Mercedes-Benz Vancouver, though availability is limited. As a national leader in EV sales, we’re proud to offer this groundbreaking model to our valued clients.
