The Future of Hybrid.
Understanding Mercedes' MHEV EQ Boost
August 02 2022, Mercedes-Benz Vancouver
With vehicle electrification becoming a more prevalent topic in today’s automotive landscape, Mercedes is taking steps toward diversifying its product line with full-EV offerings, as well as high-performance hybrid systems.
These Mild Hybrid vehicles are available to drive today and all have exceptional fuel efficiency.

One of the largest commitments Mercedes has made towards improving the energy efficiency of their traditional combustion vehicles is the introduction of mild-hybrid electric vehicle (MHEV) systems, called EQ Boost.
Whereas conventional hybrid systems employ large, high-voltage batteries to power the engine for long periods of driving time, MHEV systems use small electric motors to support the engine during vehicle acceleration and prolonged cruising. While the EQ Boost’s footprint may be minuscule within the larger powertrain, its contribution to a higher performance engine with increased output and lower energy consumption is not to be underestimated.
The EQ Boost mild-hybrid system consists of a 0.9-kWh lithium-ion battery, connected to a powerful 48-volt integrated starter generator (ISG) which effectively acts as a starter, alternator, and electric motor, linked directly to the vehicle’s engine block and transmission.
The ISG acts as a starter motor, bringing a silent ignition as the engine comes to life. During acceleration, the ISG applies electric power straight to the engine, providing additional, instantaneous horsepower and torque without consuming fuel. In “Eco” mode, the ISG will autonomously shut down components within the powertrain, efficiently “sailing” the vehicle engine free. This draw of energy is later returned to the 0.9-kWh battery via regenerative braking.
EQ Boost is one of the keynote features of the 2022 Mercedes-Benz C 300, an all-new C-Class compact sedan, equipped with a 2.0L turbo four-cylinder engine. The C 300 is the first of the C-Class series to include the 48-volt MHEV system, providing an additional 20 hp and 147 lb-ft of torque on demand. The system’s ISG is built into the updated nine-speed transmission, providing outstanding performance and efficiency, perfect for tackling BC roadways.
Furthermore, the overall driving experience provided by the EQ Boost enhances the overall feel of maneuvering a high-performance internal combustion vehicle, providing dynamic efficiency while cultivating that traditional sporty thrill. Drivers will immediately notice smoother off-the-line launches and seamless overtake maneuvers thanks to the elimination of turbo lag. This rewarding balance of sustainability and electrically-assisted performance is truly the champion of mild-hybrid systems.
